The Stars and Stripes Forever: Your Guide to Flag Day

It isn't a federal holiday like the Fourth of July, and you don't get the day off work. Yet, for millions of Americans, it is a day of profound pride, history, and patriotism.

If you are searching "How many days until Flag Day?", you are likely preparing to display "Old Glory" on your porch, planning a ceremony, or simply curious about the history of the red, white, and blue.

Our Live Flag Day Countdown Tool above ensures you know exactly when June 14th arrives. But beyond the timer, this guide is your handbook to American history. We will explore the origins of the flag, the Betsy Ross legend, and the strict rules of etiquette every patriot should know.

When is Flag Day 2026? (June 14, 2026)

Flag Day is celebrated annually on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777.

📜 The Resolution of 1777

On this day, the Second Continental Congress passed the following resolution:

"Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."

It took until 1949 for President Harry S. Truman to sign an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

Betsy Ross: Fact or Fiction?

Every American schoolchild learns the story of Betsy Ross sewing the first flag at the request of George Washington. But is it true?

The Legend: In 1776, Washington and two other committee members visited Ross, a Philadelphia seamstress. She supposedly convinced them to change the stars from six-pointed to five-pointed because they were easier to cut with a single snip of scissors.

The Reality: There is no documentary evidence from the 1770s to support this. The story didn't appear publicly until 1870, nearly a century later, promoted by her grandson. While she did make flags for the Pennsylvania navy, credit for the design likely belongs to Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

The Business of Patriotism

The American flag is one of the most recognized symbols in the world, and its production is a massive industry.

Your Countdown Strategy: Proper Etiquette

Use our days until Flag Day timer to check the condition of your flag. Displaying a tattered flag is considered disrespectful. Here are the key rules from the U.S. Flag Code.

  • Sunrise to Sunset: The flag should only be displayed from sunrise to sunset on buildings and stationary flagstaffs. It can be displayed 24 hours a day ONLY if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
  • Don't Let it Touch: The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.
  • No Apparel: The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. (That "flag" shirt you wear on July 4th technically violates the code unless it's just a print of the flag, not an actual flag made into a shirt).
  • Disposal: When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. Many VFW posts and Scout troops collect flags for proper retirement ceremonies on Flag Day.

How is it Celebrated?

While not a public holiday (except in Pennsylvania), it is marked by significant events.

Quincy, Massachusetts: Claims the longest-running Flag Day parade in the nation, celebrating since 1952.

Three Oaks, Michigan: Known for the largest Flag Day parade in the world (relative to its size), drawing thousands of spectators.

"Pause for the Pledge": At 7:00 PM EDT on Flag Day, Americans are encouraged to pause and recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. It is a national observance, but schools, banks, and post offices remain open. Pennsylvania is the only state that recognizes it as a legal state holiday.

It was designed by a 17-year-old high school student named Bob Heft in 1958 for a class project. His teacher gave him a B- but promised to change the grade if Congress accepted it. After Hawaii joined the union, President Eisenhower chose Heft's design, and his grade was updated to an A.
